  • Personnel: Morrissey (vocals); Alain Whyte, Boz Boorer (guitar); Roger Manning (keyboards); Gary Day (bass guitar); Dean Butterworth (drums).Recording information: Conway Studios, Los Angeles, California; Sarm Hook End, Berkshire, England.Armed with a new label (Attack Records), a new producer (Jerry Finn of Blink 182 and Green Day fame), and, on the album cover, a Tommy gun, Morrissey immediately lines up his targets at the outset of YOU ARE THE QUARRY. The sharp-witted Brit-pop icon takes shots at the United States and England, respectively, on the biting "America Is Not the World" and the bold "Irish Blood, English Heart." Unsurprisingly, the rest of the album doesn't shy away from frustration-fueled topics ("I Have Forgiven Jesus," "The World Is Full of Crashing Bores"), revealing that the former Smiths singer hasn't missed a step lyrically or vocally in the seven years since 1997's MALADJUSTED.Enhanced by the guitars of longtime collaborators Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer, the sound here is vintage Morrissey, though a few tracks bear the energetic influence of QUARRY's punk-pop-inclined producer. Standout songs include the gorgeous, dreamy "I'm Not Sorry" and "First of the Gang to Die," a love letter to his unlikely Latino fan base in Los Angeles. While the record clearly marks a new phase for the beloved crooner, it also reminds listeners of why they grew to love him in the first place.

  • Personnel: Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone); Idrees Sulieman (trumpet); J.J. Johnson (trombone); Hank Jones (piano); Barry Galbraith (guitar); Oscar Pettiford (bass); Jo Jones (drums).Recorded at Reeves Sound Studios, New York, New York on March 12 & 15, 1957. Originally released on Riverside (233). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews.Digitally remasterd by Joe Tarantino (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).THE HAWK THAT FLIES HIGH is a swingin' small group session lead by Coleman Hawkins in 1957. This album features the then-young bebop musicians J.J. Johnson (trombone), Idrees Sulieman (trumpet), Barry Galbraith (guitar), Oscar Pettiford (bass), and the great Hank Jones (piano). The rhythm section plays with a quieter, calmer approach to the music best evidenced by the opening track "Chant." However, early hard-bop is heard on tracks such as "Juicy Fruit" and "Blue Lights." Refusing to be pigeon-holed, Hawkins returns to his swing roots with "Sanctity." This is one of Hawk's best efforts from to come out of the 1950s.

  • Personnel: Oscar Peterson, Benny Green (piano); Ray Brown (bass); Gregory Hutchinson (drums).Recorded at Manta Eastern Sound, Toronto, Canada on September 10 & 11, 1997. Includes liner notes by Alyn Shipton.Though these two pianists are a generation apart, there is much love suffused in this swinging duo's playing. The dialogue between the two players is so seamless it's hard to tell who's playing when. And no, two pianos isn't too much when the players are as sensitive and understanding of each other as these two. If one plays a swinging single-note line, the other punches rhythmic chordal accompaniment, if one plays tight chords in the high register, the other lays down resonant pads underneath.Peterson and Green never get in each other's way or let things get too busy. On "Spring is Here," the two pianos tumble together in a cacophony of chords, evoking the willful randomness of Mother Nature. Likewise, they trip playfully through Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz" as the melody descends. The unison playing on the bebop tune "Scrapple From The Apple" comes late in the program as a sort of culmination, the two players swinging together perfectly as one.
